Why Aren’t We Thankful?
One of the characteristics of Christians is “thankfulness.” By that I mean we must have a truly “thankful heart“, rather than just giving the careless thanks we always do. No matter how long we have lived in faith or how loyal we are to the church of God, if there is no gratitude in our spirit, we will have to examine our relationship with God and our spiritual state.
Unfortunately, many believers tend to put the concept of thanksgiving in the context of the world rather than their relationship with God. However, not only is this not real appreciation, but it is also unbelief. The reason why thanksgiving based on worldly conditions is bound to be temporary is because the ground for that thankfulness is based on the uncertainty of the worldly values. Apostle Paul was able to give thanks and rejoice even in prison (Eph 5:20; Phi 4:4-6; Col 3:17).
Thankfulness has a strong connection with a life of faith that cannot be separated. We often quote the first question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.” But without thanksgiving, we cannot glorify God or enjoy Him. The psalmist says, “He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me” (50:23a). NASB translates it as “a sacrifice of thanksgiving.” In other words, worship without thanksgiving is a futile service. No matter how magnificent and religious the service seems to be, if it is not a service of gratitude, it can be reduced to an act wholly unrelated to God. Our Lord also equated the thankfulness of the Samaritan who had been healed from leprosy with giving glory to God. “Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” (Luke 17:18)
Then why is there no thanksgiving? First, it is because people have not experienced the emotional depth of salvation. That is not to say they are not saved. For salvation is granted by God’s sovereign grace. To help you understand, for example, a prisoner on death row who was about to be executed is pardoned by the grace of a king. How joyful he would be, and how grateful he must be to his savior! Or in another instance, let us say that a person who owes a debt that he cannot afford to pay has been forgiven the entire amount from his creditor. How ecstatic and grateful would he be!
The second reason why there is no gratitude is that we are not humble. How many saints experience the conviction of salvation or serve the Lord’s church as ministers or lay leaders? How much did we devote ourselves in the beginning? And how much grace and blessing have we received? However, there are many cases in which we forget that grace and become proud without even realizing it. As the saying goes, “A frog doesn’t remember the time when it was a tadpole.” The first thing the Lord said in the Sermon on the Mount was the blessing to “the poor in spirit” (Mat 5:3), reminding us to always remember that we are spiritually bankrupt apart from God. That is true humility, and heaven belongs to those who practice it.
Many years ago, a church member working as an apartment manager asked me to introduce her a wheelchair user looking for an apartment, saying that there was a wheelchair accessible room available in the building. I introduced her to a sister who was severely disabled, and even now, many years later, she always expresses her gratitude to us and our Ministries. We are so happy, and I wonder how much more pleased God must be with such a grateful heart. Her appreciation comes from humility, for thankfulness and humility always go together.
Lastly, the cause of our ungratefulness is our unrepentant heart. We may forget the excitement of salvation in our lives, or we may be influenced by the values of the world. That is why we compare our life to that of others, and complaints and resentments fester instead of thankfulness. However, whenever that happens, we must reaffirm our status in our relationship with God and repent of our proud heart. I believe that it is then that God will restore our thankfulness.
In the month of thanksgiving, I pray you be full of true thanksgiving and joy from God, not simply seasonal gratitude or a habitual act of religion.

왜 감사가 없을까요?
크리스천의 특징 중 하나를 “감사”라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 입버릇 처럼 말하는 감사가 아닌 “감사하는 마음”말입니다. 아무리 오랜 세월 신앙생활을 했건, 어떤 직분을 가지고 주님의 교회에 충성하건 우리의 심령에 감사가 없다면 하나님과의 관계와 우리의 영적상태를 진단해봐야 할 것입니다.
안타깝게도 많은 성도들이 감사의 근거와 조건을 하나님과의 관계에 두기보다는 세상적인 조건에 두는 경향이 있습니다. 그러나 그것은 진정한 감사가 아닐 뿐만 아니라 불신앙이라고 할 수 있습니다. 세상적인 조건에 근거를 둔 감사는 일시적일 수 밖에 없는 것이 감사의 근거를 정함이 없는 세상에 두고 있기 때문입니다. 바울 사도께서는 옥중에서도 감사하며 기뻐할 수 있었습니다 (엡5:20; 빌4:4~6; 골3:17).
감사는 신앙생활과 분리될 수 없는 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있습니다. 웨스트민스터 소요리문답에 나오는 첫번째 문답을 우리는 종종 인용합니다. “사람의 제일 되는 목적은 하나님을 영화롭게 하며 영원토록 그를 즐거워하는 것입니다.” 그러나 감사가 없으면 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수도, 그분을 즐거워할 수도 없습니다. 시편 기자는 이렇게 말합니다. “감사로 제사(예배)를 드리는 자가 나를 영화롭게 하리라” (50:23a). NASB는 “감사의 제사(예배)”라고 번역합니다. 즉, 감사가 없는 예배는 헛된 예배라는 것입니다. 아무리 예배가 웅장하고 거룩해 보여도 감사의 예배가 되지 않으면 하나님과 관계없는 신앙의 행위로 전락할 수 있습니다. 우리 주님께서도 문둥병에서 나음을 입은 한 사마리아인의 감사를 하나님께 영광 돌리는 것과 동일시하셨습니다. “이 이방인 외에는 하나님께 영광을 돌리려 돌아온 자가 없느냐?” (눅17:18)
그러면 왜 감사가 없을까요? 첫째는 구원의 감격을 체험하지 못했기 때문입니다. 그랬다고 구원을 받지 못했다는 말은 아닙니다. 구원은 하나님의 주권적인 은혜로 받는 것이니까요. 이해를 돕기 위해 예를 들자면, 사형집행을 앞두고 있던 어느 사형수가 왕의 은혜로 사면을 받았다고 합시다. 얼마나 기쁘고 그분에게 감사하겠습니까! 또 하나의 예를 들자면, 도저히 갚을 수 없는 빚을 진 사람이 채권자로부터 전액을 탕감 받았다고 가정합시다. 얼마나 기쁘고 감사하겠습니까!
감사가 없는 두번째 이유는 겸손하지 않기 때문입니다. 얼마나 많은 성도들이 구원의 감격도 체험하며 혹은 부르심을 받아 사역자로 혹은 평신도 지도자로 주님의 몸된 교회를 섬깁니까? 처음에는 얼마나 열심히 헌신하였습니까? 그리고 얼마나 큰 은혜와 축복을 받았습니까? 그런데 우리도 모르게 은혜를 잊어버리고 변질되는 경우가 많습니다. 이는 교만해졌기 때문입니다. 속담처럼 “개구리가 올챙이 적 생각을 못하는”것입니다. 우리 주님께서 산상수훈에서 제일 먼저 하신 말씀이 “가난한 심령”에 대한 축복입니다(마5:3). 즉, 하나님을 떠나서는 영적으로 파산한 자임을 항상 기억해야 합니다. 그것이 진정한 겸손이며 천국은 그런 분들의 것입니다.
수년전에 어느 교회 성도님이 자신이 매니저로 있는 아파트에 휠체어 장애인을 위한 방이 하나 나왔다며 저에게 사람을 소개해 달라고 하셔서 우리 회원들 중 어려운 한 분을 소개한 적이 있습니다. 여러 해가 지난 지금도 그 자매님은 저희 부부와 선교회에 항상 감사한 마음을 표현할 때마다 우리도 이렇게 기쁜데 하나님께서는 저렇게 감사하는 마음을 얼마나 기뻐하실까 생각해 봅니다. 그 자매님의 감사는 겸손에서 나온 것입니다. 감사와 겸손은 항상 병행합니다.
마지막으로 감사가 없는 이유는 우리 성도들이 회개하지 않기 때문입니다. 우리도 살면서 구원의 감격을 잊어버릴 수도, 세상의 가치관에 영향을 받을 수도 있습니다. 그래서 다른 사람들과 비교하게도 되구요, 감사하는 마음 대신 불평과 원망이 싹트기도 합니다. 그러나 그럴 때마다 우리는 하나님과의 관계에서 자신의 신분을 재확인하며 심령이 교만해진 것을 회개해야 합니다. 그러면 하나님께서는 우리에게 감사하는 마음을 회복시켜 주실 줄 믿습니다.
감사의 달을 맞이하여 절기적인 감사, 입버릇처럼 말하는 신앙의 행위로서의 감사가 아니라 하나님께서 주시는 진정한 감사와 기쁨이 충만하기를 기원합니다.
