To Become Truly Rich
Every Thanksgiving season, my heart is warmed by listening to sermons and praise songs about thanksgiving and by sharing love gifts. Remembering the grace and blessings that God has granted us, especially during this past year, makes us feel so grateful.
Due to the prolonged pandemic, our Ministries will not be able to hold a full-scale Thanksgiving service this year either. Instead, we would like to share a Thanksgiving feast with a small number of in-person participants after the morning service, and deliver simple turkey dinner boxes prepared for the lonely families with disabled members in the afternoon.
As many of you may feel, the pandemic has changed so many things, including our culture. This is not only limited to our daily lives, but church services and fellowships were greatly affected as well. If this situation continues for more than several months, it will be difficult for everything to return to its pre-pandemic state, even if the COVID-19 pandemic ends someday. This is because our way of life has already established itself as the “new normal”.
Above all, it seems that people’s hearts are prone to change at an alarming pace. Just as the rapid speed of technological change, people’s minds are turning unloving, apathetic, ungrateful, uncontrolled, and selfish quickly! Individualism is far more developed than the spirit of “we” community.
Therefore, evangelism seems to be more difficult in wealthy countries like the United States. On the other hand, many impoverished countries are equivalent to “rich fi shing grounds” when it comes to missions. For their lives have been so devastated by the pandemic, and that the missions set up by mercy ministries are more effective than ever.
Beloved, I’m sharing this message with everyone today in the hope that we will all become truly rich people. No matter how many worldly treasures we have, if we don’t have a grateful heart in us, we are just “wealthy beggars”. In contrast, if our hearts are full of gratitude despite having little, we will be wealthy people with no reason to envy others.
No matter how times change, the truth of the gospel is unwavering. If the pandemic has eliminated reasons to be thankful in your life, you must reconfirm your spiritual status. This is what apostle Paul says: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.” (2 Cor 8:9) Allow me to explain this in simple terms. Jesus Christ, who had all authority, power, and glory with God the Father from before the creation of the world, laid down every divine prerogatives, came to the earth in the flesh, and died on the cross like a criminal for our sake. Therefore, that means believers have become spiritually wealthy through the substitutionary death of Christ. In other words, it is the fact that believers have been made rich in salvation, forgiveness of sins, joy, peace, glory, splendor, and majesty. Even the saints became co-heirs with Christ (Rom 8:17). Praise the Lord!
Therefore, the basis of our thanksgiving should lie in this spiritual wealth. We shouldn’t try to find it in this world. So, apostle Paul commanded the saints to rejoice always and to give thanks in all circumstances, even in a situation where we cannot be grateful or joyful from the world’s perspective. (1Thes 5:16-18).
Then, how should we live in the end times as those who have become rich by God’s grace? First of all, we must share our love and concern with our close family members, relatives, and sisters and brothers in Christ. Furthermore, alms and missions will be needed for the neighbors in need, and those who do not know the gospel in countless impoverished countries around the world. To give alms is to invest in God (Prov 19:17). It is meant to accumulate our rewards in heaven, which will be our eternal home. Isn’t this the purpose of celebrating Thanksgiving this year as well? I believe that we will all be truly rich people when living this way of life. Praise the Lord!

진정으로 부요하려면
매년 감사절기가 되면 감사에 대한 말씀과 찬양을 많이 듣고 사랑을 나눔으로 마음이 훈훈해집니다. 특별히 지난 한 해 동안 하나님께서 우리에게 베풀어 주신 은혜와 축복을 상기하며 감사하게 됩니다.
장기화되고 있는 팬데믹으로 본 선교회에서는 금년에도 총동원 감사절예배를 드리지 못합니다. 대신 소수의 대면예배 참석자들과 오전예배 후에 감사절 만찬을 함께 나누고 오후에는 외로운 장애인 가정들을 위해 약식으로 준비한 터키만찬 박스를 배달하려고 합니다.
모두가 느끼시겠지만 팬데믹은 우리의 문화를 비롯해서 너무 많은 것들을 바꿔 놓았습니다. 우리의 일상생활에서부터 교회에서의 예배와 성도의 교제까지 모두가 적지 않은 영향을 받았습니다. 이와 같은 사태가 앞으로 수개월 이상 더 지속된다면 언젠가 COVID-19이 종식된다고 할지라도 팬데믹 이전의 상태로 모든 것이 복귀되기는 어려울 것 같습니다. 이런 삶이 “뉴노멀”로 이미 자리를 잡았기 때문입니다.
그러나 무엇보다도 무섭게 빨리 변화되고 있는 것은 사람들의 마음 같습니다. 하이텍의 빠른 변화의 속도 못지않게 사람들의 마음이 얼마나 빠르게 무정해지고, 무관심해지고, 감사치 아니하고, 절제하지 못하며 이기적으로 변하고 있는지요! “우리”라고 하는 공동체 의식보다는 개인주의가 극도로 발달하고 있습니다.
그러므로 미국과 같은 부유한 나라들에서는 전도가 더욱 어려워지는 것 같습니다. 반면에 수많은 가난한 나라에서는 오히려 선교에 관한한 “황금어장”을 만난 것 같습니다. 왜냐하면 그들의 삶은 팬데믹으로 훨씬 더 피폐해졌으며 그 때문에 긍휼사역을 통한 선교는 그 어느 때보다도 효과적이기 때문입니다.
여러분, 저는 오늘 우리 모두가 진정으로 부요한 자들이 되었으면 하는 바람에서 이 메세지를 나눕니다. 세상적으로 아무리 많은 것을 가졌다 할지라도 감사하는 마음이 그 사람 속에 없다면 그는 “부요한 가난뱅이”에 불과합니다. 한편, 가진 것은 별로 없을지라도 그 사람의 마음이 감사로 가득하다면 그 사람은 남부러울 것이 없이 진정으로 부요한 사람일 것입니다.
아무리 시대가 변할지라도 복음의 진리는 변치 않습니다. 팬데믹으로 여러분의 삶 속에 감사할 이유와 조건들이 사라졌다면 여러분의 영적 현주소를 다시 확인할 필요가 있습니다. 바울 사도께서는 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “우리 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 너희가 알거니와 부요하신 자로서 너희를 위하여 그가 가난하게 되심은 그의 가난함을 인하여 너희로 부요케 하려 하심이니라”(고후 8:9). 이 말씀을 쉽게 설명 드립니다. 하나님 아버지와 창세 이전부터 모든 능력과 권세와 영광을 누리셨던 그리스도께서 모든 신적인 특권을 내려 놓으시고 육신을 입고 이 땅에 오셔서 우리를 위하여 범죄자처럼 십자가에서 죽으셨다는 것입니다. 그리고 우리 신자들은 그리스도의 대속의 죽음으로 인해, 영적으로 부요한 자들이 되었다는 말씀입니다. 즉, 구원과 죄 용서함과 기쁨과 평강과 영광과 존귀와 위엄에 있어서 신자들이 부요케 되었다는 사실입니다. 심지어는 우리 성도들은 그리스도와 함께한 후사가 된 것입니다(롬 8:17). 할렐루야!
그러므로 우리가 감사해야 할 근거는 바로 이런 영적인 부요함에 있습니다. 그것을 세상적인 것에서 찾으려고 하면 안 됩니다. 그래서 바울 사도께서는 세상적으로는 도저히 감사할 수도 기뻐할 수도 없는 상황 속에서도 성도들에게 항상 기뻐하라고, 범사에 감사하라고 명령하신 것입니다(살전 5:16,18).
자, 그렇다면 하나님의 은혜로 부요케 된 자들로서 우리는 어떻게 이 말세를 살아야 할까요? 먼저는 가까운 가족과 친척, 그리고 믿음의 성도들에게 우리의 사랑과 관심을 나눠야 할 것입니다. 더 나아가서는 어려운 이웃과 지구촌의 수많은 가난한 나라에서 복음을 알지 못하는 분들을 위해 선교와 구제를 해야 할 것입니다. 구제는 하나님께 투자하는 것입니다(잠 19:17). 우리의 영원한 집이 될 천국에 상을 쌓아 두는 것입니다. 이것이 금년에도 감사절을 맞이하는 의의가 아닐까요? 이런 삶을 살 때 우리가 진정으로 부요한 자들이 될 줄 믿습니다. 할렐루야!
