Looking Toward the Rewards in Heaven!
Happy New Year! May the grace and peace of our Lord be with all those who will receive the Shalom newsletter throughout the new year!
In 2021, despite lacking in many ways, I received two significant awards. One was the “Proud Husband Award” granted to me by the LA Chapter of the National Unifi cation Advisory Council in May for the month of Family Awareness, and the other was the “Distinguished Man of Yonsei Alumni Award” which I received in December. The former was given for setting an example for all families in the community by taking care of my wife, who became severely disabled due to a car accident, with unchanging love for 32 years, and maintaining a happy marital relationship for 44 years. The latter was awarded about 49 years after graduating from my alma mater, and was given in the name of the president of Yonsei University in recognition of my contribution to the world mission for the disabled people over the past 22 years; these works elevate the prestige of my alma mater, as it is a mission school.
It is all by God’s grace, and these are the rewards I received thanks to my wife, since I would never have received them without her. It is a great blessing and privilege for us both to be called servants of the Lord, and run special ministry for the disabled through the pain of losing all our children, as well as my wife’s disability. On the other hand, there is a fear of what would happen if we lose our rewards in heaven because of our earthly rewards. In fact, this award should be given to the churches and saints that support Shalom Disability Ministries, and to the missionaries who are devoted to spreading God’s love in various countries around the world, but I received it on their behalf. This would not have been possible without your prayers and support. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have encouraged us with love and have faithfully supported Shalom’s ministry.
These earthly rewards are temporary and will soon fade. The “heavenly rewards” are what is truly important. As you know, salvation is not based on works. This is because we receive salvation through faith by the grace of God. Even that faith is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, if we are saved believers, we must run the race of faith to receive the rewards. In other words, believers must fight a spiritual battle. This is the Christian life of faith. If there are no rewards in heaven, He is not a just God. The author of Hebrews writes: “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6). In addition to this, the rewards in heaven are mentioned several times in verses like Matthew 5:12, 1 Corinthians 9:24, and Revelation 22:12. On the other hand, there is something we must be vigilant about. For unless we are truthful and faithful, we may end up with no rewards at all. These are the words of our Lord Himself: “’Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.’” (Matthew 6:1). Our Lord calls such people hypocrites (verse 2). This means they are actors wearing masks. We can see many hypocrites in our society, especially in the world of politics and business, but hypocrites can even exist in the church too. These are people who want to receive praise and recognition from the world and others rather than from God.
How, then, can we receive the rewards of heaven? These are the words of the Apostle Paul: “I have fought the good fi ght, I have fi nished my course, I have kept the faith… not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Due to the unprecedented pandemic, it feels as if the last days are approaching quickly. I hope that you and I will be fi ghting the good fi ght of faith throughout the year of 2022, longing for the Lord’s Second Coming and looking towards the rewards in heaven.

하늘의 상을 바라보며
새해에 복 많이 받으세요! 샬롬 뉴스레터를 받는 모든 분들께 우리 주님께서 주시는 은혜와 평안이 새해 내내 함께 하기를 기원합니다.
2021년도에 부족한 사람이 뜻 깊은 상을 두 번이나 수 상했답니다. 하나는 가정의 달 5월을 맞이하여 LA 민주평통자문회에서 받은 “자랑스런 남편상”이었고, 다른 하나는 12월에 받은 “자랑스런 연세인 상”이었습니다. “자랑스런 남편상”은 교통사고로 중증장애인이 된 아 내를 32년간 변함없는 사랑으로 간병하며 44년간 여전히 행복한 부부애를 유지함으로 지역사회 모든 가정에 모범이 된다는 의미에서 주신 상입니다. 그리고 “자랑스런 연세인 상”은 모교를 졸업한지 약 49년만에 받은 것으로 지 난 22년간 세계 장애인선교에 기여한 공로와 특별히 미션스쿨인 모교의 위상을 높인 점을 인정하여 연세대학교 총장의 명의로 주신 상입니다.
한마디로 하나님의 은혜요, 아내의 덕분에 받은 상들입니다. 중증장애인된 제 아내가 없었다면 절대로 받을 수 없는 상이었기 때문입니다. 우리 아이들을 모두 잃은 아픔과 아내의 장애를 통해 주의 종으로 부름 받아 장애인 특수목회를 할 수 있었던 것은 우리 부부에게 큰 축복이요 특권이 아닐 수 없습니다. 한편, 세상에서 받은 상들로 인해 “하늘의 상”을 잃으면 어떡하나 하는 두려운 마음도 있습니다. 사실, 이 상은 샬롬사역을 후원해 주시는 교회와 성도님들이, 그리고 지구촌 여러 나라에서 선교에 헌신하시는 선교사님들이 받아야 할 상인데 제가 대신 받은 것입니다. 여러분들의 기도와 후원이 없었더라면 있을 수 없는 일입니다. 이 기회를 통해 저희 부부를 사랑으로 격려해 주시고 샬롬 사역을 성실하게 후원해 주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
이 땅에서의 상은 일시적이요, 머지 않아 잊혀져 없어질 것입니다. 중요한 것은 “하늘의 상”입니다. 아시다시피 구원을 받기 위해 우리가 해야 할 수고와 노력은 전혀 없습니다. 구원은 하나님의 은혜를 인하여 믿음으로 말미암아 받은 것이기 떄문입니다. 그리고 그 믿음조차도 하나님께서 주신 선물인 것입니다(엡2:8-9). 그러나 구원 받은 성도라면 상을 받기 위해서는 반드시 믿음의 경주를 해야 합니다. 다른 말로, 성도는 영적인 싸움을 싸워야 합니다. 이것이 성도의 신앙생활입니다. “하늘의 상”이 없다면 공평하신 하나님이 아니시지요. 히브리서 기자는 이렇게 기록합니다. “믿음이 없이는 기쁘시게 못하나니 하나님께 나아가는 자는 반드시 그가 계신 것과 또한 그가 자기를 찾는 자들에게 상 주시는 이심을 믿어야 할지니라”(히 11:6). 이 외에도 “하늘의 상”에 대한 기록은 수차례 나옵니다(마 5:12; 고전 9:24; 계 22:12).
다른 한편, 우리가 반드시 경계해야 할 부분이 있습니다. 잘못하면 상이 하나도 없을 수 있기 떄문입니다. 우리 주님께서 친히 하신 말씀입니다. “사람에게 보이려고 그들 앞에서 너희 의를 행치 않도록 주의하라. 그렇지 아니하면 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 상을 얻지 못하느니라”(마 6:1). 주님께서는 그런 사람들을 외식하는 자들이라 말씀하십니다(2절). 즉, 가면을 쓴 배우들이라는 것입니다. 위선하는 자들 은 우리 사회에서, 특별히 정계나 재계에서 많이 볼 수 있지만 심지어 교회 안에서도 얼마든지 있을 수 있습니다. 저들은 칭찬과 인정을 하나님으로부터 받기보다는 세상과 사람들로부터 받고자 하는 자들입니다.
그러면 우리는 어떻게 “하늘의 상”을 받을 수 있습니까? 사도 바울께서 하신 말씀입니다. “내가 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니… 내게만 아니라 주의 나타나심을 사모하는 모든 자에게니라”(딤후 4:7-8). 전례 없는 팬데믹으로 인하여 말세가 성큼 다가온 느낌입니다. 주님의 재림을 사모하고 “하늘의 상”을 바라보며 2022년 내내 믿음의 선한 싸움을 잘 싸우는 저와 여러분 모두가 되시기 바랍니다.
