The 44th Wheels of Love Project
It has already been 24 years since our Ministries was established. When I began the ministry at the age of 50, a point that most Koreans would view as relatively late, I had this wish: when I go to be with the Lord in the future, I want to tell Him that I served Him for at least 20 years. However, it has already been four more years than that original goal. Now, I pray with the thought of preparing when and how to bring my ministry to a close.
At the end of September 1999, four months after the establishment of our Ministries, the first “Wheels of Love” project was enacted, and the forty-third was carried out in March 2020, just before the pandemic. This means we have done this meaningful project for an average of twice a year. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced us to shut down this precious ministry for the past three years. Of course, that does not mean that we have simply been standing back and letting go of our work.
We promoted “Bread of Life Project” for the countless people who came out in front of their homes or on the road with white flags to appeal for help. During the first year of COVID-19, tens of thousands of disabled individuals, orphans, widows, and those stricken with poverty were fed at around twenty mission sites. In the second and third years, we were able to effectively execute our ministry, aiming to assist those same four groups but focusing especially on those with disabilities, supplying medical equipments(such as locally purchased wheelchairs), meals, and Bibles in each area’s native language. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude toward the missionaries who worked with us. Many missionaries also thanked Shalom for being the most diligent and meaningful ministry. I also thank everyone who supported this project with prayers and donations to make it all possible.
The “Wheels of Love” project, which is set to resume for the first time in three years, will be the 44th one, as the title of this article indicates. How thankful and thrilled we are! This year, we will be sharing the Gospel with about 2,000 people with disabilities, while providing practical help via one container each of medical equipments to missionaries Min Soo Park in Uganda and Doo Seok Hong in Bangladesh, who are dedicated only to ministering to the disabled.
To be frank, it is not easy to run this Ministries as an organization for the disabled and only carry out a local ministry. However, Shalom is likely the only ministry in the Korean Community of Southern California that has carried out both domestic and overseas missions from the beginning of its establishment. God led me to work for a trading company for quite a while before becoming a pastor, and He gave me a holy burden to serve the disadvantaged people with disabilities in the global village as I started this Ministries. All I did was obey God’s call with faith. Everything has fallen into place by the will of God. I would like to give glory and thanks to the Lord, who has guided our Ministries amid His blessings for the past 24 years. Praise the Lord!
I am already overwhelmed with joy imagining how many people with disabilities, in the second half of this year, will be free from the confines of their homes, able to go outside and see the beauty of nature, breathe fresh air, and have the privilege of attending church. We praise God, who has worked wonders through our frail Ministries and will continue to fulfill new things, like a potter with earthen vessels. Hallelujah!

제44차 사랑의 휠체어 보내기
본 선교회가 설립된 지 어느덧 24년이 지났습니다. 한국식으로는 당시 50세라는 비교적 늦은 나이에 사역을 시작하면서 이런 소원을 가졌었습니다. 즉, 훗날 주님 앞에 갔을 때 그래도 20년은 사역하고 왔다고 말씀드리고 싶었거든요. 그런데 벌써 4년을 더한 것입니다. 이제는 언제 그리고 어떻게 사역을 마무리해야 할지 준비하는 마음으로 기도하고 있습니다.
선교회가 설립된 지 4개월만인 1999년 9월말에 제1차 “사랑의 휠체어 보내기”사업을 추진하여 팬데믹 직전인 2020년 3월에 제43차 사업을 실시했었지요. 그러니까 1년에 평균 두번씩 이 뜻깊은 사업을 추진한 것입니다. 그런데 안타깝게도 팬데믹으로 인해 지난 3년간 이 귀한 사업을 중단할 수 밖에 없었습니다. 물론, 그렇다고 저희 선교회가 그동안 손을 놓고 있었던 것은 아닙니다.
먹을 양식이 없다고 집 앞에서 혹은 도로에 나와 백기를 들고 도움을 호소하는 수많은 사람들을 위해 “사랑의 양식 보내기”사업을 추진하여 팬데믹 첫 해에는 20여개의 선교지에서 수만명의 장애인, 고아와 과부 등 가난한 분들에게 양식을 제공하였으며, 팬데믹 2년차와 3년차에는 장애인들을 중심으로 고아와 과부들에게 현지에서 구입한 휠체어 등 의료보조기구들과 함께 양식을 제공하며 현지어로 된 성경책을 보급하여 효과적으로 선교사업을 펼칠 수 있었습니다. 차제에 동역하신 선교사님들께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 여러 선교사님들이 샬롬 덕분에 가장 바쁘게 그리고 뜻 깊은 사역을 할 수 있었다고 감사의 말씀도 해 주셨답니다. 그리고 이 사업이 가능할 수 있도록 기도와 물질로 후원해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.
그리고 만 3년만에 재개하는 “사랑의 휠체어 보내기”는 제목처럼 제44차 사업이 됩니다. 얼마나 감사하고 감격스러운지요! 금년에는 장애인선교에만 전념하시는 우간다의 박민수 선교사님과 방글라데시의 홍두석 선교사님께 각각 한 컨테이너의 휠체어와 기타 의료보조기들을 선적하여 약 2,000명의 장애인들에게 실용적인 도움을 주면서 복음을 전하려고 합니다.
사실, 장애인단체로서 선교회를 운영하며 국내사역만 수행하는 것도 쉬운 일은 아닙니다. 그런데 본 선교회는 설립 초기부터 국내사역과 함께 해외사역을 동시에 수행한 남가주 한인 커뮤니티의 유일한 선교회일 것입니다. 하나님께서는 부족한 저에게 목사가 되기 전에 상당 기간 무역회사에서 일하게 하셨으며, 선교회를 시작하면서 지구촌의 불우한 장애인들을 섬기라는 거룩한 부담을 주셨습니다. 저는 하나님의 부르심에 믿음으로 순종한 것 밖에 없습니다. 그리고 모든 것은 하나님께서 친히 이루어 주신 것입니다. 지난 24년간 축복 가운데 본 선교회를 인도해 주신 하나님께 감사와 영광을 돌려드립니다. 할렐루야!
금년 하반기 중에는 수많은 장애인들이 집 안에만 갇혀 있지 않고 바깥출입을 하게 되어 아름다운 자연을 보고, 신선한 공기를 마시며, 교회에도 출석할 수 있을 것을 생각하면 벌써부터 가슴이 벅차 오릅니다. 질그릇과 같은 연약한 저희 선교회를 통해 놀라운 일을 이루시고, 앞으로도 새로운 일을 행하실 하나님을 찬양합니다. 할렐루야!
